Well with much eye rolling and Oh god not again from the Fam. ... I delved back into the world of Chickens... call it COVID madness or just the general bag of nuts that my life tends to be ....
The last time I had chickens my children where still in high school... there was a lot of fan fair as the boys built a huge coup to my specifications, complete with its own house address and fox door knocker.. I know slightly warped... of course over the years it has become rather run down and now functions as a wood shed and hunting ground for the Rascals... no mouse or vole is safe.. even the sneaky snakes stay away..... so since I can’t help myself I’m drawing up new plans for a new coup... which has to be done in 4 weeks because that’s when the peepers will be ready to go outside... no pressure boys... more eye rolling... also some rude muttering...
So yesterday I got up early...shock to the lazy Covid slug that I’ve turned into and headed at 7:45 am to stand in my social distant position along with a bunch of other nut bags to secure prized chicks available at 9 am... seriously... yes I did... there where even people with folding chairs... not kidding... this is serious clucking business my friends.... Score... 6 tiny little peepers.. 3 breeds for variety... I can’t even stand it... they are so cute... despite my better judgement since chickens and suburban wildlife can conflict... I started to name them... so far I have Angel for her sweet little yellow wings....Divine Devinia since she sleeps on her side with one leg stretch out... Ina... who sleeps in the food bowl... sorry Ina..... 3 more to go...
Chickens are by nature very curious creature and like humans have their own personalities....so the rest will unfold...
I am looking forward to this adventure.. I hope we don’t have any more middle of the night fireman incident... silly chickens pecked at the heating lamp and set the straw on fire.... 2 am a bunch of fireman descended on the Chicken house... and I was running around in my Wellies and nightie saving chickens and putting them in the kids play house... Luckily no one was hurt....Note to self hang the light higher.... also wear pajamas to bed....
I will post Part 2 as we get the coop built and progress shots of The Girls
Heading to the Lumber Yard
